AbstractWith the advancement of the technology, second language learners pay more attention on the E-resources (including online dictionaries and translation software). According to our observation, many students believe that E-resources can help them to learn foreign languages. Some even believe that language-learning is no longer necessary since advanced translation tools are available now. Technology has impacted the traditional second language classroom, and this impact is difficult avoid. Therefore, language teachers should pay serious attention on this matter.
In this research, language output has been collected from Cantonese CSL classroom. Errors caused by (mis)using E-resources have been analyzed. The following arguments have been made: (i) While E-resources can help students to produce grammatical sentences, they can provide limited help in CSL. Since students have no idea when a lexicon/phrase can be used and when it cannot be used; (ii) E-resources help students to produce sentences which are grammatical, but not necessarily appropriate in the senses of pragmatic / speech act function; (iii) E-sources pay little attention to the context, while Chinese/Cantonese employ lexicons to mark the formality. Therefore, E-resources can only provide limited help to CSL students.
