AbstractBackground and Aim:
Eczema is the most common childhood skin problem in Hong Kong. Treatment adherence is crucial in managing the condition and determining the effectiveness of eczema management. This study aimed to identify the major problems and concerns among parents of children with eczema that hindered them from adhering to the treatment.

A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 147 Chinese parents/caregivers of 3-month- to 17-year-old children with physician-diagnosed eczema. The participants were recruited from a regional hospital in Hong Kong. This study used the 12-item Chinese version Problematic Experiences of Therapy Scale (C-PETS) to assess the parents/caregivers’ perceived barriers to adherence to eczema treatment. The C-PETS assesses four domain including ‘Problems due to symptoms’, ‘Uncertainty about the therapy’, ‘Doubts about the therapy’ and ‘Practical problems’. The C-PETS is reliable with a Cronbach’s α of 0.93 and test-retest reliability with weighted Kappa values for the items ranged from 0.74 to 0.89.

The self-reported major barriers to adherence among children with mild to severe eczema were feeling overwhelmed by managing their child’s condition and parental exhaustion. Children being uncooperative, especially older children, in carrying eczema treatment was also reported as one of the major barriers.

A family-centred structured eczema education programme for parents/caregivers of children with eczema is needed to promote appropriate eczema management, empower parents/caregivers, improve quality of life of the family, and improve treatment adherence.
