AbstractThis article focuses on the film “Our Sister Hedy” made in 1957, investigating the MP&GI studio production of “illegal” Hollywood film adaptations and film remakes during the 1950s and 60s when the copyright law was mostly not enforced. Within this backdrop, the article examines Hong Kong social, political, and historical conditions reflected in the movie storylines that helped reinforce trans-regional perspectives during the Cold War era. These border-crossing adaptations and movie remakes exemplifies the film industry’s role in the westernization and imitation of Hollywood’s culture. In this article, I introduced comparative analyses to examine the film “Our Sister Hedy”, revealing how the Hong Kong remakes were shaped by and responded to the historical and geopolitical circumstances of that era. In regard to research on film aesthetics, since MP&GI was famous in its golden age for shooting “wen-yi films” (melodrama) and comedies, this study will also conduct analysis from a film aesthetics perspective to study “Our Sister Hedy” and its distinctive features.
