摘要This paper discusses the interpretations of resultative verb compounds in Mandarin Chinese. Unlike the previous account, as proposed in Li’s series papers, this paper argues that it is not necessary to employ the Causative Hierarchy to explain the readings available in Chinese resultative verb compounds (RVC). This is due to the fact that it is necessary to have a cause role in some verbs such as lei (累), as shown in sentences like Ni lei-le ta bantian le, rang ta xiuxi yixia (你累了他半天了,讓他休息一下), and this cause role has to be ranked the highest in the Thematic Hierarchy to account for the relevant phenomena and interpretations. This paper will propose a simple analysis incorporating the above fact, accounting for all the readings related to RVCs, without appealing to the Causative Hierarchy. This paper will also recognize the fact that the first NP in the relevant sentences sometimes needs to be identified as topic, instead of subject, and discusses its possible implications to the interpretations of RVCs.
