摘要Shenzhen, once a pioneer city of China’s Open Door Policy, has achieved huge success in economic growth and spatial urban development in the past three decades. The transformation of the urban landscape in this ‘Instant City’ provided excellent research materials and contexts to understand the production of space in China, especially the contest betweem ‘exchange value’ and ‘use values’ in the urban development processes. This paper examines two geographically proximate residential settlements in Shenzhen: Baishizhou, an urban village in the central district of Shenzhen, and Overseas Chinese Town (East group) previously an industrial staff quarter developed by a state-owned enterprise. Although the two settlements juxtaposed each other, the evolving mechanisms accounting for the production of places are completely different, giving rise to very different urban forms. The comparative study on these two communities tries to scrutinize critically the socio-spatial mechanisms in urban transformation and argues for the importance of ‘use values’ in spatial production as the ‘life support system’ of people’s daily life, an under-researched aspect of China’s rapid urbanisation process.
