Other information
Lung cancer patients commonly experience a high level of symptom distress. A mobile application (app) is developed for Hong Kong patients in traditional Chinese to tailor a care plan for self-managing lung cancer symptoms. This study aims to develop a cross-cultural adaptation of the symptom management mobile app for a subcultural group of lung cancer patients in Shanghai.

Cultural adaptation of the mobile app for symptom management is guided by a content model. Mismatch between features of original self-management skills and those of targeted participants were identified from the literature. The original intervention was translated from traditional Chinese to simplified Chinese. An advisory panel of relevant stakeholders was formed to review the appropriateness of the intervention in terms of language, context, and cultural practice. The panel’s comments informed modifications of self-management skills. This preliminary version will be piloted tested in the subcultural group of Chinese patients.

Results and Discussion
On the basis of the content model, fidelity to the core elements of the interventions are maintained with additional contents added to accommodate the uniqueness of Chinese patients in language, health beliefs, values and practices. Modifications of self-management skills were made at two levels, namely cognitive and affective-motivational adaptation. Details about the modifications will be presented in the symposium.

A systematic modification of the self-management skills promotes cultural relevance for diverse groups of Chinese patients. A culturally sensitive intervention can enhance the applicability and effectiveness of the mobile app for self-managing lung cancer symptoms.
