摘要The rapid urbanization in China is driven by significant urban-rural gap and massive rural to urban migration of floating population. The floating population reached its peak in 2014 and began to decline recently in China. Return migration has also emerged. Significant studies have been carried out about the settlement intentions of floating population at their urban destinations and return migration. Rural migrants return to their home villages or counties for various reasons at various life stages. Based on the theoretical insights from Zelinsky’ mobility transition, Hugo’s circular migration, new economics of labor migration and migration as an endogenous process of development, a research framework is developed to study migration and return migration in this paper. The paper then examines the urban to rural return migration and their determinants in China based on the sampling data collected in 2015. The paper analyzes the characteristics of return migrants and the roles of individual, household and regional factors in the migration duration before their return migration. The findings contribute to the understanding of the migration, return migration, changing urban-rural relations and social-spatial equity in China.
