AbstractINTRODUCTION: Gangliosides participate in signal transmission between cells and affect the development of the nervous system. Decrease in the level of ganglioside expression lead to serious pathologies of the central nervous system. Alpha 2, 3-sialyltransferase (ST3GAL5) is an enzyme that regulates the synthesis and glycosilation of gangliosides. Studies on genetically modified mice that lack of ST3GAL5 enzyme, as well as clinical data, indicate that a ST3GAL5 defect can lead to cognitive impairment, and also disrupts the mechanism of regulation of platelet adhesion in the brain vessels. Mice with a genetic absence of ST3GAL5 are a new model for studying disorders associated with the pathology of this enzyme. Previously, it was shown that these mice are characterized by increased sensitivity to insulin, hearing impairment, neurophysiological disorders and impaired activation of CD4 T cells. However, the behavioral characteristics and cognitive functions and mice with ST3GAL5 deficiency were not described previously.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the cognitive characteristics and behavioral characteristics of mice with ST3GAL5 deficiency.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1) Y-maze test was used to assess impulsivity in spontaneous alternatives; 2) test for memorizing objects; 3) taste test for flavoring aversion; 4) test for extracting objects from the cylinder

RESULTS: In the test for memorizing objects and in memorization, mice with ST3GAL5 deficiency exhibited normal performance. In the test of the learned taste aversion, a tendency to reject new taste was observed in mice with ST3GALV deficiency, which may indicate the manifestations of neophobia. In the test for the extraction of objects ST3GAL5-deficient mice proved to be more resistant to the effects of lipopolysaccharide, which causes systemic inflammation.

CONCLUSION: Mice deficient in ST3GAL5-deficiency do not exhibit cognitive abnormalities, they are more resistant to the effects of systemic inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide, and impulsivity rates were not impaired.
