Photocatalytic Mineralization and Detoxification of Pentachlorophenol

摘要Optimal physico-chemical conditions for the photocatalytic degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by UV-TiO2 system were determined. Under the optimized conditions (200 mg/L of TiO2, 6.7 mM of H2O2, 17 mW/cm2 UV and pH at 10), the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) reached 95% after 60 min. The degradation pathway was determined by analysis of their degradation products and intermediates by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Their major intermediates were tetrachlorohydroquinone (TeHQ) and tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TeBQ). There was no detectable intermediates found after 60 min treatment.

Although photocatalysis is a powerful treatment of contaminated water, it may generate toxic intermediates during the degradation and contribute part of toxicity in the solution. For the Microtox test and amphipod survival test, the photocatalytic treatment shows a reduction on the toxicity of PCP. Based on the results of the study, the toxicity of PCP was non-detectable for Microtox test after 60 min, while reduced toxicity was found for amphipod survival test.
