AbstractIn tune with the conference theme ("Mobility in the Early Modern Period") the paper explores The Tempest as a site which encourages both ideas of mobility (the play's wide geographic range; the figure of Ariel) and of restrictions on mobility (the frequent imprisonment of figures, both physically and psychologically). The paper also suggests ways of staging the play that bring out these two largely incompatible approaches.
