AbstractThis entry begins by explaining the need that human beings have for interpersonal relationships. Several categories of intercultural friendships (interethnic, interracial, international, interreligious) are examined, as well as ties between people who differ in terms of social class, language, age, ability (e.g., physical, mental), gender, and/or sexual orientation. The benefits and barriers to the development of meaningful intercultural friendships (e.g., differing cultural perceptions, cyber connections, the formation of intercultural friendships/networks) are then discussed. Recommendations are made for future investigations of intercultural friendships.
