AbstractNon-planar polycyclic arenes are not only unique objects of structural organic chemistry in relation to the nature of aromaticity, but also play an important role in science of conjugated carbon nanomaterials and organic functional materials because of their interesting structures and promising applications. We have recently designed and synthesized a series of novel non-planar polycyclic arenes using two strategies, namely introducing steric strains [1, 3] or embedding seven-membered rings.[2, 3] The first part of this presentation introduces high-mobility organic semiconductors based on twisted polycyclic arenes, which are forced out of plane by atom overcrowding at the fjord regions. With varied functional groups, molecules of twisted hexabenzoperylenes (HBPs) self-assemble into layered semiconductors with a unique brickwork arrangement for chemical sensing. Based on twisted-HBPs, we fabricated monolayer field effect transistors [3] and highly sensitive and selective sensors for fluoride in water. The second part of this presentation focuses on heptagon-embedded polycyclic arenes, which can serve as segments, model compounds and, in principle, synthetic precursors for negatively curved carbon nanomaterials. To be highlighted here are two aromatic saddles having remarkably curved polycyclic backbones composed of 70 carbon atoms.[2]
