AbstractThis chapter conceptualizes social media data as big data sources and summarizes the different types of social media data in social science research. Furthermore, the chapter outlines big data analytical methods that are widely used for research into social media and society. Specifically, the chapter develops a new typology of big data analytics according to the purposes of their application in empirical studies; i.e., measurement, description, causal inference, and intervention. Finally, the chapter also highlights the challenges and opportunities for future studies.
