AbstractIn this presentation, we will introduce a blended spirometry learning module and share our experiences on how this module benefits students' knowledge on respiratory physiology and pulmonary diseases, and strengthens students' learning experiences in spirometry and its clinical application.
Spirometry is one of the most commonly used approaches to test pulmonary function. In order to assess a patient's lung function, clinicians often use a clinical spirometer and guide the patient to perform a series of pulmonary function tests. These tests measure how much air the patient inhales and exhales during quiet breathing, and with maximum effort, and the results can help clinicians to assess patients with pulmonary diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
To facilitate students' understanding and enrich their learning experiences on the practical uses of the spirometer, we have developed a blended spirometry learning module which combines online learning, animated interactive videos and face-to-face practical sessions for teaching and learning of spirometry. Our results demonstrated that these activities not only enabled students to engage in the learning of spirometry and respiratory physiology, but also strengthened their relevant knowledge, analyzing skills and experiences. Through the use of this blended spirometry learning module in a flipped classroom approach, we observed that students engaged more actively in classes and that students found learning spirometry and respiratory physiology more fun and interesting.
Taken together, our module significantly enhances students' learning experiences and knowledge on respiratory physiology and pulmonary diseases, and provide a useful learning tool in teaching spirometry.
