AbstractMany Chinese high school students choose to study via international schools and programmes to chase global elite universities (e.g., Ivy-league institutions). Current literature on Chinese students’ international learning experiences mainly focuses on their journeys in destination countries. However, few studies have investigated how parents and students prepare in China to chase global elite universities. Drawing on Bourdieu’s thinking tools, we conducted a qualitative study to explore parents’ strategies and Chinese students’ experiences in international schools in Beijing and Shanghai. Findings reveal that students and parents have adopted various strategies to systematically “produce elites” to meet the admission requirements of elite universities, seemingly forming an industry in the domestic educational market. These students become “fish” out of the Chinese education field during this process. However, they are “in the water” of the international field. They seemed to study in an in-between field that develops cosmopolitan capital and habitus for future elite higher education in formatted mechanisms.
