3-d visualization of spatiotemporal intersection (stin) operation: An approach to test spatiotemporal correlation

摘要To test the correlationship between different phenomena is an important method in environmental studies. Visualization provides a visual communication tool to examine the quality of spatiotemporal data and to test the correlation hypothesis between different spatiotemporal datasets after spatiotemporal intersection. The visualization capabilities of existing 2-D GISs are insufficient for 3-D spatiotemporal data. On the other hand, there are image data managers (IDM) available for displaying 3-D data. The capabilities of such managers include overview, profiling, 3-D clipping and iso-surface highlighting. An experiment is carried out to link ARC/INFO and SUNVISION (an IDM). Before the linkage, 3-D model reconstruction from point data of different times and 3-D intersection based on a user’s correlation model are performed. Through the link, the resulting 3-D data are passed to the IDM for visualization. The test datasets are the monthly precipitation and air temperature recorded from 344 stations throughout the US, from January to December, 1980. © 1994 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
