AbstractThe fibromyalgia syndrome is increasingly recognized though the local figures are unknown. It has the cardinal features of: 1) chronic muscular aching and/or stiffness; 2) local tenderness at specific tender points; 3) a non-restorative sleep pattern; and 4) absence of active inflammatory disease (normal ESR, CK, TSH). It is a non-articular disease and is not an inflammatory condition. Its pathogenesis is still unclear and may involve several variables including sleep disturbance. Response to current modalities of treatment is variable. Until more is learned about the source of pain and fatigue and before effective treatment can be developed, a compassionate and understanding attitude will be the best approach at the present time.
