AbstractThe opening chapter of the Zhuangzi is entitled ‘xiao yao you’, which Burton Watson rendered as ‘Free and Easy Wandering’. This seems to me to be a fitting description of Douglas Robinson’s book because I find his entire attitude toward the use of classical Chinese texts, the Chinese language, and the historical record of Chinese-European interaction to be all too ‘free and easy’.
