AbstractUrbanization in China has been fast since the 1990s. According to latest report by by National Bureau of Statistics, it is found that the urbanization rate has reached 54.77% in 2014. This has led to a series of urban environmental problems and changed urban climatic conditions, e.g. intensified urban heat island (UHI) effect. There is a need to understand the urban morphology and its impact on local thermal environment. The concept of Local climate zones (LCZ) classification was developed by Stewart and Oke in 2012. It is a well-known international standard way to describe the land cover and its thermal performance on UHI. Wuhan and Hangzhou are two major cities in China selected to conduct a case study.
In this paper, firstly, the background information of these two cities is collected and different types of LCZ and training samples of seventeen climate-based classification categories are obtained by visual interpretation from Google Earth. Secondly, LCZ maps of these two selected cities are generated from System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses (SAGA) software after inputting training samples. Thirdly, an accuracy assessment method is performed by using comparison (confusion matrix) between the generated LCZ maps with validation samples. For further validation, master plan of land use and future city development plan, and as well as the associated metadata are also incorporated to improve the accuracy of this research. Finally, based on the understanding of LCZ and local urban development plan, a set of planning recommendations will be developed. The study results will be uploaded on open on-line database and available for architects, city planners and designers, so they can make a better design and create quality outdoor environment for local citizens.
