AbstractOntological linguistics research enables us to analyze language phenomenon systematically, thus can definitely benefit the field of language teaching. In the meantime, language teaching might also benefit the field of linguistics research. Taking Cantonese as an instance, while researches like field studies and corpus studies enable us to understand the language from the perspective of native speakers, TCSL might guide us to understand Cantonese from the view point of non-native speakers. Therefore, some linguistic phenomenon, which were overlooked by the traditional researches, can possibly be observed and discussed.
In order to achieve this, a bi-directional model between second language teaching and linguistics research is suggested. The classifiers in Cantonese are used as an example illustrating how linguistics research help teachers to correct the errors made by L2 students, and how error analysis can help us to discover some undiscussed linguistic phenomenon. The main objectives of this model are: showing us a more comprehensive view on the language; as well as helping us to teach L2 students more effectively.
