Can We Predict the Bone Quality and Bone Strength by Assessment of Hand Grip Muscle Power in Adolescents?

摘要Introduction: Many studies have found significant correlation between muscle mass and bone mass. However, the
relationship with other bone quality parameters remains unclear. This study aimed at evaluating the correlation between muscle strength and bone quality in adolescents after adjusted for maturity and body size.

Methods: A total of 551 normal boys and girls aged 7 to 17 years were randomly recruited. Muscle strength of nondominant hand was assessed by standard hand grip dynamometer, bone quality of distal radius with high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography, and bone mechanical properties through finite element analysis. Partial correlation for adjustment for age, body height, and body weight was used for statistical analysis.

Results: In both genders, there was significant correlation between hand grip muscle strength as well as total, cortical, and trabecular area and cortical thickness of distal radius (R, 0.13-0.33). For boys, the hand grip muscle strength was also correlated positively with volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) in both cortical and trabecular compartment, bone volume / total volume, and trabecular thickness (R, 0.17-0.33), and negatively correlated with structure model index (R= –0.25). Positive correlation between stiffness, failure load, and muscle strength was also detected in both genders (R, 0.23- 0.42).

Discussion and Conclusion: Our results indicated that bone morphometry parameters were well correlated with hand
grip muscle strength in both genders and in boys, additional correlation with vBMD and trabecular microarchitectural
parameters was found. Further studies are warranted to further validate and quantify the hand grip muscle strength
versus other muscle functional studies in predicting bone quality and bone strength in different ages.
