Case report of a treatment protocol for Cantonese-speaking children with childhood apraxia of speech
Refereed conference paper presented and published in conference proceedings

摘要Background: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is one of the motor-based speech sound disorders (SSD) with little understanding in Cantonese-speaking population. Though there are many treatment approaches proposed for the English-speaking population, there has been no study on how these approaches could be applied in the Cantonese speakers with CAS. The aim of this study was to report the results of the treatment protocol that was designed for Cantonese-speaking children with CAS.
Methodology: Two single-case studies were reported in this study. Two Cantonese-speaking children with childhood apraxia of speech were recruited to participate in twelve 45-minutes treatment sessions within six weeks. The treatment protocol consisted of two main parts. They were speech exercise, which required the children to repeat specific syllable structure in three times, and training of selected stimuli with the use of structured cueing hierarchy. The outcome of the treatment was measured in terms of the complexity of phonotactic structure, speech intelligibility, acquisition of trained stimuli and generalizability in untrained stimuli.
Results: For both children, the complexity of phonotactic structure was increased in terms of number of syllables. The trained stimuli were acquired with increasing percentage of accuracy in treatment phase and retention was noted in the post-treatment phase. One child showed improvement in the speech intelligibility of the trained stimuli. No generalization to untrained stimuli was recorded.
Conclusion: This study provided positive preliminary evidence on the treatment protocol for Cantonese-speaking children with CAS. Improvement was noted in terms of increasing number of syllables, acquisition and retention of trained stimuli and speech intelligibility.
