AbstractMushrooms produce a number of molecules with medicinal properties, including polysaccharides, polysaccharide-peptide complexes, lectins, and antifungal proteins have been isolated from several mushroom species, but the one from Coriolus versicolor designated as PSP is the most extensively studied.PSP induces apoptosis in a variety of tumor cells by regulating the expression of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes.. It inhibits angiogenesis, regulates the production of cytokines, counteracts the action of immunosuppressive agents, and potentiates the action of antitumor drugs.PSP is devoid of toxicity on female reproductive physiology and embryonic development.. Polysaccharide-peptide complexes from other mushroom species also manifest antitumor and immunoregulatory activities. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
