Abstract

分久必合,合久必分: 從耶穌時代到改革前夕的西方基督教批判史 is a book
that introduces the foundational 1500 years of the history of Christianity to
Chinese readers. The first centuries are a period of crucial decisions that
shaped the subsequent journey of the Christian faith movement until today. The
book tells how the Christian faith story unfolded in a dialectic movement of
hegemony and emancipation, institutionalization and protest, petrification and
renewal, missionary involvement in the world and separation from the world. It
presents core topics of the Christian theological tradition laid out in an understandable
historical narrative, for instance: How did the belief develop that Jesus of
Nazareth was more than a specially anointed prophet and that he was God? Why
and how did the belief in God-in-three-persons emerge? How did the
understanding of human’s radical corruption develop? How did the power of the
papacy grow?

The
book presents its narrative through 13 chapters, partly chronologically, partly
topically ordered. In the latter section, the book critically discusses mission
history, institutional history, history of renewal and protest movements,
history of theological thought, and other topics.

The
book aims at bridging the gap between the remote world of the first fifteen
hundred years in the West and the Chinese present by engaging with the readers’
culture and context.
