P2y12 inhibitor, Clopidogrel inhibits renal fibrosis by blocking macrophage-to-myofibroblast transition

摘要Fibrosis is a common pathway leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Macrophage-to-myofibroblast transition (MMT) is a newly identified pathway associated with progressive renal fibrosis in both human and experimental mouse model of CKD. Clopidogrel is a P2Y12 inhibitor and able to inactivate platelets-associated coagulation. It also exhibits anti-inflammation and fibrosis effect although the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We thus hypothesized that P2Y12 may play a role in renal fibrosis by triggering the process of MMT and targeting P2Y12 may be a novel and effective anti-fibrosis therapy for CKD.
