Bioclimatic design of redevelopment at urban waterfront: the case study of Victoria Dockside in Hong Kong

摘要Increasing urbanisation results in intensified urban heat island effect and accentuates the impact of increasing air temperature due to future climate change. It leads to increasing thermal stress and deteriorating living quality of the urban environment. Bioclimatic design provides solutions to mitigate the intensified urban heat island and hence improves urban liveability. This study aims to investigate how mitigation measures affect microclimatic conditions and outdoor thermal comfort, using a redevelopment project at urban waterfront as a case study. Numerical modelling was conducted to evaluate the thermal performance of the redevelopment project and its surrounding neighbourhood. Air temperature, wind speed, and physiological equivalent temperature were calculated for the previous scenario and the redeveloped configuration characterised by the adoption of mitigation strategies to urban heat island such as urban greening at different levels, ventilation corridors and shading opportunities.
The redeveloped configuration results in a reduction in air temperature up to 0.6°C, especially along the main road where major pedestrian activities occur and vertical and at-grade greening are located. It also reduces PET by up to 6°C, mainly found in the areas under shade and covered walkway. The impact on wind speed is rather variable with a reduction of wind speed of approximately 1m/s. However, in the immediate surroundings of the high-rise section of the redevelopment project, wind speed increases by up to 0.7m/s. It shows that bioclimatic building design can mitigate the impact of urban heat island effect and achieve more comfortable conditions for pedestrians and space users in the surrounding areas.
