AbstractThe present edition of the Zhuangzi莊子contains a total of 33 chapters (pian；篇), including seven Inner Chapters (nei pian；內篇), 15 Outer Chapters (wai pian；外篇) and 11 Mixed Chapters (za pian；雜篇). The Literature Record (Yiwen zhi 藝文志) of the Han shu漢書lists a presently lost preceding redaction of the Zhuangzi in 52 chapters, with the Jingdian shiwen經典釋文also recording the commentated edition by the Western Jin西晉scholar Sima Biao司馬彪in 52 chapters, including seven Inner Chapters, 28 Outer Chapters, 14 Mixed Chapters, and three Chapters of Explanatory Material (jieshuo san；解說三). Nevertheless, the present edition was abridged and rearranged by another Western Jin scholar Guo Xiang郭象into 33 chapters, with the three Chapters of Explanatory Material being lost. Detailed discussion on the content and transmission of the chapters has been observed in the academia, arriving at no overall consensus. Therefore, this article first examines the sequence and position of the three Chapters of Explanatory Material within the Sima Biao commentated Zhuangzi, arguing that the 「Explanatory Colophon to the Zhuangzi」 (Zhuangzi houjie；莊子後解) as well as the 「Summary of the Essentials of the Zhuangzi」 (Zhuangzi lüeyao；莊子略要) attributed to the King of Huainan淮南王as cited in Li Shan’s李善commentary to the Wenxuan文選had both belonged to the three Chapters of Explanatory Material in the Sima Biao commentated Zhuangzi; then proves that the two pieces of text could not have possibly been lost chapters of the Huainan Outer Book (Huainan wai；淮南外), as proposed by Qing清and present day scholars.
