AbstractIntroduction:
Vocabulary has been recognized as an important area in understanding the language development of preschoolers. With adequate psychometric properties, a vocabulary test for both Hong Kong-Cantonese and China-Mandarin can be treated as an effective research and clinical tool.
This study is to apply Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) technology to develop a Receptive Vocabulary Test for Hong Kong-Cantonese and China-Mandarin young children aged from 2.5 to 6.5.

Method:
Test item construction is the initial phase of this study. Vocabulary items are selected from four categories of sources, based on cultural relevancy and unambiguous illustration using photos. Content validation process by expert panel will be implemented.

Result:
More than 3000 vocabularies have been collected from Chinese language database, vocabulary tests, dictionaries, story books and textbooks. The list was reduced to 600 with reference to expert judgement.

Conclusion:
Test plate construction will be conducted with the resulted vocabulary list. With further validation steps, this ongoing study will provide an improved and evidence-based clinical tool for preschool receptive vocabulary assessment.
