摘要Background
Partnership with the mental health service users has become an important tenet of mental health care since the growing popularity of recovery-oriented practices. Coupled with the managerial impetus to enhance service effectiveness by increased user participation, the call for partnership with the mental health service users in service planning and management has started to pick up momentum in the Chinese community of Hong Kong.

Aims
The study to be presented is based on a collaborative research with the mental health service users and service providers in Hong Kong, to understand the responses of the service users and service providers to the vision of partnership between them, and to identify the acceptable extent of users’ decision-making power in the proclaimed partnership relationship.

Methods
As a collaborative research, the study engaged a group of mental health service users and service providers from an integrated community mental health service center in the research team to plan for and implement the study. Survey strategy was employed to capture the views of a larger number of stakeholders. Whilst convenience sampling was used to collect data from service users of the center, all staff members taking part in the provision of mental health services in the organization were included in the survey. Meanwhile, the collaborative research was also a case of partnership for understanding the interactional dynamics in the process of collaborative decision-making.

Results
The study identified that the respondents had mixed attitude toward partnership with the mental health service users in service planning and management. The author’s experience in facilitating the collaborative research also revealed the challenges in enacting the partnership relationship.

Discussion / conclusion
The study concludes that successful partnership with the mental health service users required conscientious leadership and communicative capability, as well as an ontological stance embracing multiple realities.
