摘要Environmental hazards and high costs of the refining and gasification process in today hydrogen production industries forced people to develop renewable and sustainable hydrogen production technologies. Traditional biological fermentation and photo-induced water electrolysis through catalysts either have low volumetric productivity, hydrogen production rate, or lack of specificity and transduction efficiency to hydrogen chemical bonds.

In this study, a metal sulfide-bacterial hybrid system was constructed by coating cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles (NPs) onto the cell surface of Escherichia coli. Enhanced hydrogen (H2) production by the hybrid system was observed under anaerobic condition with visible light irradiation. The increased amount of H2 produced the hybrid system was not due to that produced by photocatalytically by the CdS NPs isolated from the hybrid system. The photo-enhanced H2 production by the hybrid system was large than that of live E. coli alone or live E. coli mixed with CdS NPs isolated from the hybrid system. Heat-treated hybrid system lost H2 production ability. The mechanism of for photo-enhanced H2 production by the hybrid system was then determined by various physiological and biochemical analyses. Finally, by using natural sunlight and real wastewater the hybrid system demonstrated its economic feasibility H2 production.
