Microbial enhancement of metal ion removal capacity of water hyacinth

摘要Metal ion pollution has depleted the water resource and threatened human health. A simple, inexpensive and effective method to remove metal ion in wastewater treatment is needed. Water hyacinth is reported to be a good metal ion accumulator and is widely used in plant-based wastewater treatment system. To increase the metal ion removal efficiency of the plant-based system, inoculation of rhizospheric metal ion removing bacteria to enhance the metal ion removal efficiency of water hyacinth was attempted.

Rhizoshperic Cu2+, Ni2+ or Zn2+-resistant bacteria (resistant to 25 mg L-1 respective metal ion) were isolated from the roots of water hyacinth and the metal ion removal capacities (RCs) of these bacterial strains were determined. The Ni2+ and Zn2+ RCs of the respective metal ion resistant-bacteria were low (less than 4 mg g-1 ), while one of the Cu2+-resistant bacterium (Strain CU-1) had a comparatively high Cu2+ RC (10.59 mg g-1).

The effect of inoculating Strain CU-1 on the Cu2+ RC of water hyacinth was studied. The experimental water hyacinths were treated with antibiotic, oxytetracycline (OTC), to remove the natural bacterial populations in plant rhizospheres. Inoculation of Strain CU-1 increased the Cu2+ RC by 1.91 (OTC treated) and 1.56 (untreated) folds when compared with control. Results also showed Strain CU-1 was able to colonize onto the plant root surface and increased the Cu2+ RC of water hyacinth.
