摘要In many institutions of higher education across the globe, the number of non-local students continues to rise with the intensification of internationalization efforts. As campuses are becoming more diverse, administrators often assume that this is bringing about meaningful intercultural dialogue on campus; however, many studies have found that this is often not the case as students tend to interact with ‘in-group’ members who share the same ethnicity (Luo & Jamieson-Drake, 2013; Spitzman, 2014). To better understand the internal and environmental barriers to the formation of multicultural friendship networks, a study was conducted at a Hong Kong university, which centered on the academic and social (non)integration of 244 incoming international exchange students. This mixed-method research pinpointed a number of obstacles and facilitating factors that influenced multicultural relationship-building. The findings also helped to formulate practical, constructive suggestions for interventions that could be implemented to foster inclusivity and interculturality on campus.
