AbstractWhen the notion “world literature” meets Eileen Chang, her image as a literary star in wartime Shanghai and a canonical figure among the Chinese-reading communities comes to a radical shift. She remains little known in world literature and is even regarded as a case of “failure” in achieving a reputation outside of China. Chang was ranked as a “minor author” in the chart “Canonicity by MLA Citation 2006-2015” in the MLA Bibliography articles between 2006-2015 in North America, while Lu Xun is ranked as a “major author” during the same period.

Well-known not only for her bi-lingual writing and self-translation, Chang has also been serving as a translator and an appropriator of Western works including those by Hemingway and Marquand. Despite her fame as a hypercanon in modern Chinese literature, Chang encounters great difficulties with her publishing in the US and the UK.

This paper attempts to examine the notion of “world literature,” together with its applicability and limitations by re-visiting the case of the modern Chinese writer and cultural-translator, Eileen Chang. The paper will also investigate how English-writing scholars of modern Chinese literature attempt to reverse the “technologies of recognition” by anthologizing and contributing to the related academic discussions.
