“Shuitu” (“suido” in Japanese, literally water and soil), a Chinese term that first appeared in the Zhongyong (The Doctrine of the Mean), is used to refer to the geographical conditions in China. It is not a common term and is primarily used in agricultural and medical writings. It is neither an important term nor sophisticated concept in Chinese Confucianism. “Suido” was developed into a nativist discourse in Tokugawa Japan. Using natural environment and geographical location to praise Japan had a long tradition, but the term “suido” was not used until the Tokugawa period. Yamaga Sokō and Kumazawa Banzan expressed their Japan-centered ideologies in terms of “suido”. Nishikawa Joken further developed the suido discourse in his Nihon Suidokō by using Western knowledge and the concepts of the Yijing (Classic of the Changes) to support Shinto and nativist ideas. This study examines the formation, content and historical significance of the suido discourse in Tokugawa Japan. In particular a textual analysis of the Nihon suidokō can deepen our understanding of the interaction among Shinto, Confucianism and Western learning and the changing attitude towards China among Tokugawa intellectuals.
